View Full Version : How exclusive should this forum be?

Now that we have our new forum, I think we should discuss what we're trying to accomplish here.

So far, the membership is low, and the post count is as well. However, the quality of the posts is very high, which is good.

The quality of the posts makes for some, surprisingly, intelligent conversation for a forum. Because of this I have to wonder, what are we looking for here?

Do we want to make another Hofo, with a gargantuan user base with thousands of (admittedly) low quality posts?

Or do we want to keep the membership low and the quality high?

I think we all want this forum to grow, but at what cost. Right now, Slowfo is, basically, an extension of TFS. Should it, or will it, stay this way?

I guess this question is probably a bit premature, but it crossed my mind, and I wondered what everyone else is thinking.

Well, as it stands right now we haven't even advertised this forum to the main hofo population. Only TFSers know about it, and others possibly via word of mouth. After we do our mod election tomorrow, we will probably make a global announcement for everyone else at hofo. What this forum becomes is up to all the users, with an obvious bigger push for premium hofo subscribers. We will end up having threads and polls in TFS concerning enhancements to the site. It really all comes down to what you guys want.

I see. You're going to open it up, but paying Hofoers will, sort of, call the shots.

Interesting. I like it. I just hope this forum manages to remain unique, compared to Hofo.

I think maybe this is a good plan of action. I do agree with Mick though as this forum seems to have high quality posts. I wouldn't want to lose that, but as word gets spread, you're going to get the regular trolls and arguers, but either way..

I also think it shouldn't be the "same" as hofo. Maybe we should make it more broad. HoFo typically deals with more cell issues than anything, so maybe we should try to prevent it from turning into a duplicate hofo. I still think we should have the same standards as HoFo though. :)

All of these things are up to you guys. Feel free to start a thread about it in TFS to discuss the general direction that you all want to go.

in certain ways, i'd like to see this forum as 'the underground' of hofo..
will this be a place where we can 'share' media?

there's already a 'torrent, etc' section.. just a thought.
hmm.. come to think of it now, if we did this.. it will increase popularity among leechers.

i like hofo cause you can learn about the latest and greatest in phones.. from actual users, that for the most part.. know what they're talking about.
what i didn't really like is/was when 'off topic' discussions, post whor-ism mattered more than the main attraction(s), the phones.

but this is just me ranting about how hofo evolved..

I agree. To add to your statement - I like how it's very laid back in here so far.

In HoFo, sometimes users can be pretty harsh on noobs or people that ask a question they think is stupid. Seems like the members in here are good at having constructive things to say, or they just don't say them at all. Which is great.

It doesn't hurt that no one around here could be considered a newb. Everyone is a HoFo veteran, who's actually willing to pony up cash to support the site.

That makes a pretty big difference. You don't get a lot of sniping from people who are in it for the long haul, and actually care about the community.

This is true. Maybe to be a member of slowfo, you should have to be a premium member of HoFo? I don't know how you could regulate that though.

You have hit the nail on the head pretty much. This forum is an entirely separate entity from Hofo for the most part. At present TFS will be calling the shots for changes, improvements and moderation. However the forum will remain open to the public. We are encouraging anyone at all to come join. The forum will become more unique and distant from Hofo as time goes on

Sounds like a good idea to me. Leave it open to the public but shots are called in TFS. That sounds fair considering the people calling the shots are paying members.

What if we have a limit on the number of members and if you dont post your membership is removed and you can reapply to a waiting list or something.

a good idea, but there's a lot of us lurkers, can't penalize someone just for not having much to say.
not a bad idea to somehow perk premium with some say about the site.

so when's the election over?

once you announce slowfo to the populous, you can be asssured you'll have 100,000 people sign up the first week.

it should ONLY be for hofo premium subscribers :)

To start with as mentioned, but if we do that we limit our population to something like TFS. We could maybe have those us members choose to invite, but even then we are limiting our member list.
So far what's been posted by the others seems to be ideal.

We are going for a diverse community, with an eventual mix of users from everywhere. We aren't going to limit the user base. As has been stated, the hofo premium subscribers will influence the community.

What about some kind of an invite/sponsorship program. That would keep all the spammers and morons at bay for the most part.

Also, the "don't feed the trolls" post whoring thread should probably be restricted somehow. The TFS could easily get out of hand if it wasn't for the fact that we're all paying members over there. Calhoun has to rule the lounge with an iron fist to keep it from turning into a complete waste of space.

Think of it as "Boot Camp" for The Far Side & Slow Fo.

Well I'm probably going to let my sub expire in TFS. I personally dont see the point in TFS if we have this site.
