He is part of the Def Jux collective, which includes a host of Mcs and groups most people have never heard of, such as Cannibal Ox, El-P, Mr. Lif, Rob Sonic, and many others. If you are "breast fed" rap/hip-hop through the mainstream straw of the idiot box you will most likely not know these rappers exist or that there are rappers who actually have something different to say. I would put Aesop's 9-5ers Anthem, Bent Life, and No Regrets (especially) among my favorite raps songs of all time, at least from a lyrical standpoint. And yet, as much as I like him and many of the artists on Def Jux (and many outside), they can sometimes be too backpacker friendly and thus appeal only to a certain type of listener and alienate themselves from mainstream.
