Quebec city has that old euro influence. Stone paved roads and mini boutiques everywhere. Great place to chill out.

Going to Quebec in August. Perhaps we can have a SlowFo/HOFO meet with a few members.

Sacrifices are only on Fridays between 6PM and Midnight. They also have to be on a full moon night. Oh yeah, we'll need one gallon of goat blood. And booze. And LOTS of sharp objects.

Check out the Chateau Frontenac.
I'm doing that on Saturday for our first mandatory excursion (and we have a few that'll be mandatory), as soon as I'm settled in I'll have to go to a depanneur and get a 6 of Unibroue or Cheval Blanche beer
I'm for QC meet if I somehow have the internet this summer

Québec City is an amaaaazing place. My recommendations:
1) try one single word of french. Even "bonjour". This will impress the locals to no end, and make the hospitality even warmer
2) Hang out in Old Québec. They have buildings that date back to 1608, and the first university in North America. Bring your camera!
3) Dress nicely and get your hair cut. Why? Because in Québec bars, the women pick up the men just as much as the men pick up the women. Sexually aggressive women are considered normal. They'll come right over to you and tell you they want to sleep with you straight up. So don't just get shitfaced and puke in a dumpster; pace yourself and you might have some of the better anonymous sex of your life. And bring rubbers.
4) To save money for the evening, you can avoid restaurants and just buy a baguette, some good cheeses, and a bottle of wine. Then go to a park bench at noon and have your picnic. Not only is it okay, it's encouraged!
5) If you're driving, save space in your car to stock up. Québec is a poor province, and life there is cheeeeap. Liquor, clothes, food, smokes, whatever you need you can get it cheap. I have pictures of 24 bottles of beer for sale for $21.30 - the cheapest they can legally sell it to you. In Vancouver the same 24 would cost me $45.
Enjoy!

Being a QC resident myself, I'll comment on the points above...
1) Yup, if you make some kind of an effort to speak our language, you'll DEFINITIVELY get a warmer welcome.
2) That's a no-brainer.
3) Dress like a metrosexual and woman will prowl around you like you're a steak in a cage full of lions. Bring TONS of rubbers.
4) There are plenty of parks where you can have your picnic. But a baguette, cheese and wine...? This ain't France!
5) Yeah, we're poor because we're getting raped on income taxes.

I'm at Place St Foye right now using their free wifi net on my iBook, I've spoken my share of French, I find the locals either really really nice or just rude, there's no in between, I remember being at the grocery store and this lady at the grocery store was giving out samples of a product that's made in my home province, Manitoba, so I told her en francais that it's a good product and stuff like that and she just gave me a rude look, but the same thing happened to me in Winnipeg anyways, so it's just not Quebec
I drank quite a bit of beer so far, found a few new restaurants (amazing places) that I've never seen before in my life, and an 8 pack of Cheval Blanche is $10! Plus there are unibroue beers on sale (some lager I've never heard of) for only $7 for 6, very nice.
My feet are killing me, the people in my group are assholes but I've managed to spend some decent time with the ones who aren't assholes, and my TyTn is d.e.a.d so I ended up having to purchase a crappy nokia because it was my only form of communication :(

I hate Ste-Foy. The vast majority of the people there are snob, rude assholes.
And as for Unibroue beers, do try out Ephemere - fruit-flavored beer - it's absolutly amazing. Raftman is made with Whisky malt, and tastes very good. If you like the Cheval Blanche, you might also want to keep an eye out for the Blanche de Chambly, another amazing beer, or the Noire de Chambly, it's Stout counterpart.
Try Maudite, Eau Benite, Don De Dieu and La Fin Du monde too. All those four are strong beers, from 7% to 9.1%, IIRC.

I find the locals either really really nice or just rude, there's no in betweenRemember that every culture has its' own definition of "rude" and "polite". In many ways we're very rude to them, not that anyone is necessarily doing it on purpose! And as for Unibroue beers, do try out Ephemere - fruit-flavored beer - it's absolutly amazing. Raftman is made with Whisky malt, and tastes very good. Ephemere - the only "craft brewed" beer that I can't drink. Probably the only beer in my life I haven't been able to drink, and I'm capable of swallowing Kokanee if forced.
Blanche de Chambly - a great example of the Québecois beer culture. They really take pride in their beers, like Wine in Italy or being ignorant in the USA.
La Maudite - one of the most rounded, drinkable of the Unibroue choices (to my palette)
La Fin Du Monde - the name can be quite accurate if you have 2 or more

I'm fine with Place Ste Foye, but yeah, it's a bit of a snobbish mall, has too much of an "elitist" sense there, I'm sitting there right now and lots of the people appear that way, but there seems to be no such thing as an ugly woman between the ages of 18-30 here unless if they're obviously inbred. Place Laurier seems to have some of the nicer people, I remember 2 years ago this one girl at this ghetto clothes place got all excited because a group of english people (who she knew she wouldnt be able to make a sale to) were in her store, yet she kept asking us questions like if I'm liking the city, giving us pointers on where to go for getting drunk, etc, and expecting all of us to be there the next day lol, she wasn't bad looking at all.
I've tried all those beers except Eau benite, great shit, but I've been drinking mainly Cheval Blanche because it's on sale for $10 for 8, and there's a special for Unbroue lager (wtf?) 6 for $7, so much selection, so little time!
Tried ephemere before too, I actually had my (old) bottle of ephemere Thursday morning packing to head to Quebec, I bought it when I was in the province last time, it tasted pretty darn good for it being old, but we had tasters packs here a few months ago with almost all the Unibroue beers, it's a good selection. The beer and the woman are just amazing to look at and to sample.
I'm spending money too fast, I barely have any money left, and I don't get paid until beginning of June, my job isn't too hard so far, there's a (one of the only in the city) Timmies in my workplace building so that's nice.
and a few of my favourite bands are playing soon in Quebec, i'll be going to them.
If I recall.. Unibroue is only made in Chambly Quebec, you're thinking of the Sleeman (well Sapporo now) ownership of the company, its basically the same as if a Labatt brewery in Vancouver or elsewhere was producing Keith's or Kokanee, it's only produced in one facility in their respective regions and that's it.
Unibroue's definitely changed in a few years, they're now making stuff like lagers and pilsners that they were staying away from for many years, and selling it for cheap as hell, $6.99 for a 6 of Unibroue lager.. it's definitely not good enough to have the Unibroue name but it's cheap as fuck
Notorious0601

Unibroue WAS bought out by Sleeman, but Unibroue is STILL brewed in Quebec. IIRC, the Sleeman buyout allows Unibroue beers a wider distribution, so I'd chalk that as a positive.
