Those laptops are all perfect for general computer usage, i'd say.

and by those laptops I mean, inexpensive laptop computers.

I've gotten to the point where I only buy inexpensive computers, laptops or otherwise. With the things I do, there's no point in throwing two grand at a machine, when I know I'm going to replace it in six months.

im in the market to pick up a macbook. Ive been looking at many BST only to no avail of finding a decent priced one. Used Macbooks generally sell for about $200 less than retail price less taxes. At that rate im willing to just buy a new on.

I recently picked up a IBM Thinkpad T61 from the friends and family deal for $790. Great laptop and good size as well. Id highly recommend it.

There's no way I'd buy a used Macbook. They're too unreliable, even when they're new.

If anything, if you're stuck on the idea of a Macbook, I'd look at Apple's refurb site. You'll still be buying a cruddy computer, but at least it'll have a full warranty.

What problems are you referring to? I've had no issues with mine...

I've had my Satellite for almost 2 years, paid $650 for it, I don't even turn my
$1500 desktop on anymore.
If you do get a Toshiba though, definitely get a cool pad for it, they tend to get a little hot on the bottom. I think I paid $20 for the pad with 2 fans on it @ staples. Just plugs into one of the usb ports on the back.

In the ten months that I owned my first one, it went in for service 6 times for various hardware failures, and was ultimately replaced.

The biggest problem I had, that kept coming back, and is pretty widespread, is the case cracking issue. The Macbook plastics are cheap, at best. My Macbook had three different casings, and all of them developed hairline fractures in various places.

You may not even realize that your's is cracking. I didn't. I had been reading about the problem on a Mac forum for awhile, and thought the people were full of shit. I assumed it was people abusing their Macbooks, until it became a chronic problem with mine.

As computers go, I loved my Macbook. However, the amount of downtime involved with owning one is completely unacceptable, especially with the premium you pay for Apple hardware. I was, basically, sending my computer in for service every other month and every time it was a hardware failure.

I'm the same way. I bought my 1.0Ghz Dell about a month ago for $40. It's kickin' hard with Windows XP, and haven't had a problem.

I looked into the issue, and most reports show it as affecting the white series - maybe that's why I haven't had any problems, as mine is black.

I had Toshiba in 1999, installed Linux (!!!), and it was pretty solid, used till 2004
I am happy with Dell too, but I had to re-install everything from scratch (wipe all preload stuff out), and it works like a dream after that (it has been used for almost 3 years)

I vote for LevelOne
it's new in US, but it's a good brand in Eurpoe/Asia, and it's pretty solid and reliable
avoid D-Link at all cost

I've had the same linksys, wireless router running 24/7 for the last 3 years,
no problems, no complaints.
I was gonna say earlier, the reason I went with Toshiba was it was the only one that came with a complete version of windoze and all the drivers on cd's.
Instead of the operating system partitioned and rescue disks.
So you can take it home, reformat the hard drive and get all the crap off that comes preloaded. thought that was a cool feature.

I swear that Linksys has something against me - every time I buy something from that company, it's either broken or breaks within a few months. I refuse to buy anything but Netgear...

Same here. I bought the cheapest one they had at Best Buy, at the time, and it hasn't failed me in three years.

The one thing that riles me up about laptops is that where I live, it's absolutely impossible to get a laptop Winblows-free. No amount of arguing with M$ did the trick - the idiots think that blank hard drive = pirated Winblows.

A laptop would be significantly cheaper without Bill's crap... and besides, why would I pay for something I don't even want?

I know I'm kind of late here, but where I work, I see a lot of people bringing in $500 Toshibas and Averatecs mostly with problems so bad parts to replace them will be more than the price of that computer.

I personally have a 1 1/2 year old Compaq laptop, and never had any issues and only upgraded the RAM. Price? $800.

Sure, you can buy a computer every 2 years, but just remember: you get what you pay for.
