"You can always count on Americans to do the right thing---after they've tried everthing else." Sir Winston Churchill . With oil at $117 a barrel and gas getting ready to hit $4 a gal. you have to wonder if people are finally ready to get serious about conservation and alternative fuels.

You do have to wonder though; with the lack of a true alternative fuel "plan" in the US, what other options do people have? They have to go to work/school/home; perhaps more carpooling?

I don't think it will be any one answer.I think wind, solar, and nuclear(yes nuclear) will all play a part while ethanol(from sugar & alge, not corn) combined with newer, improved Lithium-Ion Batteries will meet alot of consumer's personal driving needs. The biggest problem our nation faces is not so much technology,it's political leadership. Our President should be the one setting the agenda, and crafting a long-term solution for our nation.Congress is way too divided to do anything without the President's leadership.

Well Honda is debuting that FCX Clarity this summer. The only thing that sucks about fuel cell cars right now is since there aren't many places to "fuel/charge" up, you're very limited as to where you can drive it before you're screwed and can't recharge or get back.

I think that's why they're only making them available in specific locations across southern California at first.

The main challenge with alternative-fuel vehicles: the supply network to recharge/refuel them. That's where electricty has the big advantage. There's already an electric grid in place most everywhere.I'm worried that we're wasting too much money on pork-barrel based corn ethanol projects.

Not a bad commute. Myself, on the other hand - different story. I fill up at least once every five or so days.

If we have to put ourselves at the mercy of public transit, they better be mandated by law to be non-union and never go on strike. Otherwise, we'll all suffer like Toronto is this weekend.

Granted, spending less on gas wasn't my reasoning behind it.. But this is another reason I'm happy that I have a hybrid. Yay for 37mpg. :p

Yeah, its been $3.999 here for a week now, some stations are over that mark.

My last fillup was @ $3.999 a few days ago, my next one will be 5/2/08 should be @ $3.999 also, if im lucky.

60-120+ miles a day @ 15mpg city 20-ish mpg hwy is not fun on the pocket.

It's not fun having a car that requires premium, but hey... what can ya do? While I don't like the idea of paying $3.90 for gas, I see it as a good thing eventually. I think it'll take ever-increasing gas prices to get America to wake up and end its dependency on (foreign) oil. What's the incentive to get alternative fuels working practically if gas is cheap? Hybrids are a good first step, but what we need are affordable and practical electric cars, and eventually hydrogen.

Good ol "Foreign" Canadian oil... I'm glad I don't have a vehicle, $1.26/litre ($4.76/gallon) in Canada for our own oil is just wrong, but everything has gone up in price, food, clothing, electronics

Don't we sell our oil and then rebuy it?

thank god we have Giant Eagle Grocery store's here.
For every $50 you spend there (on anything, including gift cards to other stores) you get 10 cents off per gallon of gas you pump at their Get Go gas stations. although there is a 30 gallon limit per fill up.

Everything i buy in stores now is paid for by gift cards bought at giant eagle.

I usually save all my discounts till i reach $3 in savings per gallon then go fill up the 12 gallon tank in my saturn, and four 2 gallon gas cans.

I agree that gas is getting ridiculous but I think the US needs more small diesels like europe. They get better gas mileage than the hybrids available here and are more eco friendly. Personally, I think this whole green things is B.S. but I do want to save money at the pump. Biodiesel can be made from used veggie oil to run the car. Cant get much cleaner than that imo. Better than a hybrid with those batteries.

I'm currently about 40 miles from my work. Therefore, I drive about 80 miles daily. Not to mention, wanting to drop by someone elses house for a while. I tend to look at it like this; Europe has been paying $10+ per gallon for quite sometime now, and the U.S. has had a break. It doesn't matter how much gas prices rise, we still need it, and will still continue to pay.

I can't wait for European automobile companies to start sending their diesel engine vehicles.
